More info about Ben

I joined my first shotokan karate club at age eight, and have loved martial arts ever since then. Moving through many phases and places in life, I trained in many clubs until I came to North Shotokan Karate Acedmy (affiliated to KUGB) in Northern Ireland during my PhD studies, where I found a new level of understanding of the art under the teaching of Sensei Joe McCullough, and graded for black belt in 2008 — twenty years after starting. Since then, I’ve trained and taught with three clubs in Helsinki.

Facts

  • I work as a professor at the University of Helsinki where my passion is to study how people perform at a high level, including elite sports
  • I have cross-trained, briefly, in aikido and wing chun and I'm always interested in how other arts and sports can elevate my karate
  • While not a dedicated competitor, I enjoy competing occasionally and taking home a few medals for my two kids to play with

JKS Finland is a non-profit organisation and a karate club that looks after the Shotokan Karate style as developed by Tetsuhiko Asai Shuseki Shihan. Our dojo is located in Helsinki.
