Kihon

The core of karate training

Strong Foundations

Kihon develops the fundamental techniques and body mechanics that form the basis of all karate training.

Efficient Movement

Through repeated practice, students learn balance, timing, coordination and the efficient use of the whole body.

Continuous Improvement

Kihon is practised at every level, from beginner to advanced, providing endless opportunities to refine technique and deepen understanding.

What is kihon?

Kihon, meaning ”fundamentals” or ”basics,” is the foundation of traditional Shotokan Karate. It includes the practice of basic stances, punches, kicks, blocks, body movement and transitions that are essential for effective karate. Every technique is studied carefully to develop correct form, power, balance and control.

At JKS Finland, kihon is much more than repeating techniques. It is an opportunity to understand how the body moves efficiently and how each technique should be performed with precision and purpose. Through consistent practice, students build the technical skills that support kata, kumite and bunkai.

Kihon remains an essential part of training throughout a karate practitioner’s journey. Even the most advanced karateka continue to practise the basics, knowing that true mastery comes from continually refining the fundamentals. Every repetition is an opportunity to improve technique, deepen understanding and strengthen the connection between body and mind.

Key components

Stances (Dachi)

Strong and stable stances provide the foundation for every karate technique. Proper stance work develops balance, stability and the ability to generate power efficiently.

Basic Techniques (Kihon Waza)

Punches, kicks, blocks and strikes are practised repeatedly to build precision, speed and correct body mechanics. Every advanced technique begins with strong fundamentals.

Body Movement (Tai Sabaki)

Efficient movement allows techniques to be performed with balance, control and correct distancing. Students learn to move naturally while maintaining good posture and stability.

Power Generation

Effective karate relies on coordination rather than muscular strength. Kihon teaches how to generate power by using the whole body through proper timing, hip rotation and body alignment.

Timing and Rhythm

Correct timing is essential for effective technique. Practising kihon develops coordination, rhythm and the ability to perform techniques smoothly and with purpose.

Focus and Discipline

Kihon requires concentration and attention to detail. Through regular practice, students develop patience, self-discipline and the mindset needed for continuous improvement.
