Children’s Karate Beginner’s Course – Autumn 2026

The beginner's course starts on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 5:30 PM at the JKS Finland Dojo, located at Mekaanikonkatu 17.

Give your child a hobby that builds physical skills, confidence and perseverance

Karate is much more than kicks and punches. It is a well-rounded physical activity where children develop coordination, concentration, teamwork and self-confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

At the JKS Finland Children’s Beginner’s Course, children are introduced to traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate in a way that is both engaging and appropriate for their age. Training sessions are fun, varied and carefully designed to suit children’s developmental stages. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, every child learns at their own pace.

No previous experience is required – the only thing your child needs is the enthusiasm to learn something new.

Who is the course for?

The Children’s Beginner’s Course is designed for children aged [age range] who want to start karate in a safe and encouraging environment.

No previous martial arts experience is necessary. Training begins with the fundamentals, and every child progresses according to their own abilities.

Karate is suitable for both energetic and more reserved children. Everyone is encouraged to develop at their own pace while gaining confidence through learning new skills.

What will your child learn?

During the beginner’s course, children learn the fundamentals of Shotokan Karate while developing a wide range of physical and personal skills.

Training includes:

  • balance, agility and coordination
  • safe movement and falling techniques
  • basic punches, blocks and kicks
  • the first kata (formal movement patterns)
  • safe and supervised partner exercises
  • concentration, listening skills and following instructions
  • dojo etiquette and good manners

Classes include plenty of movement, enjoyable activities and opportunities for success. Our goal is for every child to learn new skills while discovering the joy of physical activity.

Why is karate a great hobby for children?

Karate supports a child’s physical, mental and social development.

Through regular training, children learn to:

  • move with confidence and coordination
  • improve balance and body control
  • concentrate and follow instructions
  • work together with others and show respect
  • set goals and practise with perseverance
  • believe in their own abilities

Traditional Shotokan Karate places great emphasis on respect, self-discipline and consideration for others. The goal is not to teach children to fight, but to help them develop self-control, confidence and a responsible attitude.

What are the training sessions like?

Training sessions are planned according to the children’s age and stage of development.

Each class combines physical activities, karate techniques, playful exercises and learning new skills. The atmosphere is positive and encouraging, giving every child the opportunity to experience success.

Safety is our highest priority. All exercises are introduced step by step, and our experienced instructors ensure that every child can train safely and confidently.

What should my child bring to the first class?

For the first training sessions, your child only needs:

  • a T-shirt
  • sports trousers or shorts
  • a water bottle

Training is done barefoot.

A karate uniform (gi) is not required before the course begins. Our instructors will advise you when it is the right time to purchase one.

After the Beginner's Course

After completing the beginner’s course, your child can continue training in JKS Finland’s regular children’s classes.

Karate is a lifelong martial art that offers new challenges and learning opportunities year after year. Belt gradings provide motivating milestones, but the most important goal is to enjoy training and continue developing both as a karate practitioner and as a person.

We warmly welcome all children to discover traditional Shotokan Karate and begin their own karate journey with JKS Finland.
