Who is the course for?

The Karate Kids Beginner’s Course is intended for children aged 5–6 who are beginning their karate journey.

No previous karate or sports experience is necessary. The classes are designed to introduce young children to the dojo environment while developing confidence, listening skills and enjoyment of movement through positive and encouraging instruction.

Whether your child is energetic, shy, active or completely new to organised activities, every child is welcome.

What will your child learn?

The Karate Kids programme introduces the foundations of karate through activities that are appropriate for young children.

Classes include:

  • fun movement and coordination games
  • balance, agility and body awareness
  • basic karate techniques
  • simple partner exercises
  • listening and following instructions
  • taking turns and working together
  • dojo etiquette and respectful behaviour

Every lesson combines learning with play, helping children develop physical skills while enjoying the experience of training.

Why is karate a great hobby for children?

The early years are an important time for developing movement skills, confidence and positive attitudes towards physical activity.

Karate Kids helps children:

  • improve coordination and balance
  • develop body control and motor skills
  • build confidence through achievable goals
  • learn to concentrate and follow instructions
  • interact positively with other children
  • experience success in a supportive environment

Traditional Shotokan Karate also introduces children to values such as respect, courtesy and self-discipline in a way that is appropriate for their age.

What are the training sessions like?

Karate Kids classes are active, varied and full of movement. Young children learn best by doing, so every lesson includes games, challenges and age-appropriate karate exercises that keep them engaged from beginning to end.

Our experienced instructors create a positive atmosphere where children feel safe to explore, learn and make mistakes. The focus is not on perfection but on developing confidence, coordination and a love of movement while taking their first steps in traditional karate.

What should my child bring to the first class?

For the first class, your child only needs:

  • a T-shirt
  • sports trousers or shorts
  • a water bottle

Training is done barefoot.

A karate uniform (gi) is not required for beginners. Our instructors will let you know when it is time to purchase one.

After the Beginner's Course

After completing the Karate Kids Beginner’s Course, children continue training in the regular Karate Kids group, where they gradually develop their karate skills and prepare for the next stages of their journey.

As children grow, they naturally progress to the 7–12 years children’s programme, where they continue learning traditional Shotokan Karate with a broader range of techniques, kata and partner exercises.

We look forward to welcoming your child to the JKS Finland dojo and helping them take their very first steps in karate.
